HISTORY OF PILATES

Joseph H. Pilates originally invented Pilates Method and Pilates Reformer Sessions for Physical Rehabilitation for Men.  He began devising his original apparatus and teaching his Pilates techniques in 1912 during his internship in a camp on the Isle of Man for German Nationalists during WWI.  While there he taught and practiced his physical fitness program and used his program to aid in the rehabilitation of the disabled and sick.  Pilates is credited for assisting many victims of the influenza epidemic and helping others learn about Pilates and recover from wartime diseases.

Since its inception in the early 1900s, Pilates has expanded to accommodate men, women, children, seniors, elite athletes, and everyone in between. Pilates Reformer Sessions began its popularity in NYC in the 1920s with the start of Joseph H. Pilates first Studio on Seventh Ave.  Pilates soon became popular with the dance community because of Joseph Pilates deep understanding of the workings of the human body. They embraced his method, often integrating it into their dance training, as they witnessed its positive effects in both rehabilitation and performance.

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a system of physical and mental conditioning, invented by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900s. Pilates is performed on the Mat/Floor or utilizing specialized Pilates apparatus, the most well known being the Pilates Reformer Sessions.  Joseph Pilates studied Eastern and Western philosophies and forms of exercise and was greatly influenced by ancient Greek and Roman regimens. This rich background provided him with the foundation of About Pilates, as we know it today.
